Choosing your college major can be one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your adult life. Choosing a major will guide your way to your future employment. There are many factors to consider when you choose your major. Very few students enter college knowing what major to choose, and actually stick with it. Don’t be discouraged if it seems it’s taking you a bit longer than other people. College is the place to help you decide what you want to do with your life and what steps you need to take to get there.

You should first ask yourself what you’re interested in. Take a look at what special courses you took during high school, and what your personal interests are. Many people when doing this start to see a pattern. This is important because you’ll want to choose a major and career that you actually enjoy. Nothing is better than eventually getting to wake up and go to a job that you love every day. If you have to, write down a list of things you enjoyed about particular classes and go from there.

Next, consider what aspects of certain jobs do you like an admire. For example, if working with children is important to you, you’ll want to look at a major or career that is geared around this. There are so many options available. Many people look for something that includes giving back to their community.

Lastly, once you have a few ideas of what sounds best suited for you, do some research on that particular job, and see the statistics on it. There are special books and articles that can tell you how in demand a career is, and what qualities others have found to be necessary to do this job. Even talking to someone who has worked in this field themselves can help you. Look within yourself and see if you can realistically do that type of work and if you have what it takes to get the job done correctly. Once you’ve done all this soul searching, you should be well on your way to choosing your own college major.

So you have chosen your university dotted all the i(s) and crossed all the t(s), what else do you need to now to be ready for this next phase of your life?

1. Housing; Making sure you have proper accommodations is perhaps the mot important aspect of college life. Location is vital; housing should be close to campus as well as stores and other location you will be using on a regular basis.

2. Financing: Make a budget and stick to it. Find ways to save money by walking to class or using public transportation where available. Avoid credit cards at all cost if possible, if not, make sure to keep good records and to pay bills on time.

3. Find a job: Many area shops and restaurants will hire students and the college or university offer some forms of employment. Working will help get you ready for fulltime work as well as bring in some extra money.

4. Get a computer and printer. You do not want to have to rush to the library to print out a report or have to rely on using someone else. Having the proper tools and equipment are keys to success.

5. Learn the city: Get familiar with the area, study transportation system and locate stores, restaurants as well as local doctors and dentists.

6. Limit nights out: Going out is great, but very costly, limit nights out to once a week and instead find free things to do around campus with friends.

7. Buy used books: There is nothing wrong with buying used books and is a great way to save some cash.

8. Make new friends: Understand that everyone is going through the same thing you are and making new friends will make the adjustment much smoother. Join groups and start new hobbies.

9. Be sure to study: Don’t let all the fun cloud the reason you are there. Make sure to study and to keep up with assignments.

10. Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle: Eat healthy foods and get adequate rest. The body needs both nourishment and time off to perform successfully.

With the popularity of E-Readers growing with the success of Amazon’s Kindle, the debate over if Universities should start using them has drawn some pretty distinct lines. So the following is seven simple reasons why Universities should start adopting this technology.

1. The Environment – This seems like a pretty simple one, but it might be a little bit more complicated than it appears at first glance. Sure, less books are printed, but that’s not the only thing. Currently, if a new edition of a book comes out, it pretty much makes all the previous editions worthless. So now not only have you printed a bunch of books, but you have printed a bunch of now worthless books. E-readers eliminate this wasted stock and wasteful use of paper.

2. Lowers overhead – No more bookstores, no more book storage and no more people to work in the bookstore. Also, no more loosing money over books that go outdated in your school’s inventory.

3. Easier Updates – Imagine being able to keep your text books up to date with the most recent developments and information. It can easily be done with e-readers.

4. Less Confusion – Now there is no question which book students should have or which edition. Simply download and forget.

5. Hardware and Accessory Sales – For the University that is afraid that the overhead savings aren’t enough to make up for the loss of profits from the bookstore, you can recoup that by selling the actual hardware and all the accessories they will want. Because, lets face it, everyone will want to show their school spirit with that e-reader cover that has your school mascot on the front.

6. Convenient for Students – No more lugging books around or forgetting one you needed back at your room. All your books are with you all the time with your e-reader.

7. Appearances – It may sound silly, but image is everything. Schools want to look like they are more high tech and advanced than their competition, so why not play the part. Adopting new and useful technology is sure to get that extra attention.

From being environmentally conscience to being financially and technologically foresighted to the purely cosmetic, there are plenty of reasons why Universities should start using e-readers.
